Since November 2024, Germany has been rolling out a new Business Identification Number, or Wirtschafts-Identifikationsnummer (W-IdNr.). This number is designed to serve as a unique, central identifier for anyone engaged in economic activity in Germany. The goal? To simplify and digitize tax and administrative processes.

Here’s what you need to know - how it works, who gets one, and how to find yours.

Why the Business ID matters

The W-IdNr. is like the personal tax ID, but for businesses and self-employed individuals. It ensures you can be clearly identified in tax and administrative systems, no matter what changes - whether you move, change your name, or restructure your business. And the best part? It stays with you for your entire “business life.”

Who gets a Business ID?

The W-IdNr. is for anyone who’s economically active. That includes not only traditional companies and freelancers but also:

  • Nonprofits and associations
  • Public organizations
  • Anyone offering goods or services for a fee, even cultural, sports, or social institutions

If you're doing business in any way, chances are, you’ll get a W-IdNr.

➡️ Do you know the different tax numbers in Germany?

How it makes things easier

Over time, this ID will reduce red tape and allow government offices to share information more efficiently. Thanks to the “once-only principle,” you’ll only need to provide your details once, they’ll be reused automatically where needed.

It doesn’t replace your existing tax numbers (like your personal tax ID or your regular tax number), but it complements them. It’s based on § 139c of the German Fiscal Code.

What the number looks like

Your W-IdNr. comes in two parts:

  • base number that starts with “DE” followed by nine digits (e.g., DE123456789)
  • An activity code that reflects a specific business activity. This starts with “-00001” and increases with each additional business you operate (e.g., DE123456789-00002 for your second business)

💡 Important: The number doesn’t contain any personal or business data, it’s just an identifier.

When you’ll get your number

You don’t need to apply for the W-IdNr. - it’s issued automatically by Germany’s Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt). The rollout is happening in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (since November 2024):
Businesses that charge VAT or qualify as small businesses under § 19 UStG get their W-IdNr.
  • Phase 2 (starting Q3 2025):
Everyone else who’s economically active will receive their number.
  • Phase 3 (from 2026):
If you run more than one business activity, each one will get its own activity code.

Examples:

  • Base ID: 9
  • First business: 1
  • Second business (from 2026): 2

Examples of the Economic Identification Number:

DescriptionEconomic Identification Number
Your base numberDE123456789
For your first activityDE123456789-00001
For a second activity starting in 2026DE123456789-00002

How you’ll be notified

You don’t need to do anything to get your number. Notification will happen in one of two ways:

1. You already have a VAT ID (USt-IdNr.)?

  • Your existing VAT ID becomes your Business ID automatically.
  • No personal notice will be sent to you—it’s the same number.
  • As of December 3, 2024, you can start using your VAT ID as your W-IdNr.
  • This change will be publicly announced in the Federal Tax Gazette and on the BZSt website.

2. You don’t have a VAT ID?

  • You’ll receive your W-IdNr. through your ELSTER account (Germany’s official tax portal).
  • Make sure you’ve agreed to receive notifications via ELSTER.
  • If you have a tax representative, they’ll receive the number on your behalf.

💡 Important: You need an ELSTER account and must agree to receive messages there. The number won’t be sent by email or phone for privacy reasons.

FAQs: Business ID Number

Do I need to apply for the W-IdNr.?
No. It’s assigned automatically by the tax authorities when needed.

Who exactly gets a W-IdNr.?

  • If you have a VAT ID before September 30, 2024, that becomes your W-IdNr.
  • If you don’t have a VAT ID but use ELSTER, you’ll get your number there.
  • If neither applies, you’ll get your number once the legal and technical setup is in place.

Where can I find my W-IdNr.?

  • If you have a VAT ID, that is your W-IdNr.—you’ll find it in your tax documents.
  • If not, log into your ELSTER account after you’re notified.

Is the W-IdNr. the same as the VAT ID?
Almost. They look the same (both start with “DE” and have nine digits). If you already have a VAT ID, it’s reused as your W-IdNr.

But they serve different purposes:

  • The VAT ID is used mainly for VAT-related activities, especially within the EU.
  • The Business ID is a broader tool, helping separate business from personal tax matters. It’s part of a larger push to digitize and streamline administration.

Even if you don’t have a VAT ID, you’ll still get a W-IdNr. eventually—same format, different function.

If you're a freelancer, small business, nonprofit, or any kind of service provider, this number is your new official identifier in the world of taxes and government systems. You don’t have to lift a finger to get it—but once you do, it’ll be a key part of running your business in Germany.
